Sleep Safe and Sound: Your Guide to a Restful Night for Baby

Hey There, Parents!

Navigating the world of baby sleep can feel like a whirlwind, right? As your go-to birth, postpartum, and sleep doula, I'm here to share some comforting tips on creating a safe sleep haven for your little one. Let's dive in and ensure those precious zzz's are both restful and secure.

Crafting a Cozy, Safe Sleep Zone

1. The Mattress Matters:

  • Go for a firm mattress that fits snug-as-a-bug in your crib.

  • No gaps, no worries! Ensure that the mattress is hugging those crib walls safely.

2. Keep It Simple and Sweet:

  • Wave goodbye to pillows, blankets, and stuffed animals inside the crib.

  • A snug, fitted sheet is all your baby needs for a dreamy sleep setting.

3. Just Right, Goldilocks!:

  • Aim for a comfy room temperature, and think about using a sleep sack or wearable blanket.

  • The ideal sleeping temperature is around 68-72 degrees, although studies show humans sleep better with lower temperatures keeping in mind infants don’t regulate their temperature as well as adults do!

  • Let's keep our little ones cozy without overheating, shall we?

Let's Talk SIDS Prevention and Peace of Mind

1. Cheers to Breastfeeding:

  • If breastfeeding works for you and your baby, fantastic! It's a beautiful bond and offers some SIDS protection.

  • Need alternative feeding options? No shame, a fed baby is a happy baby so let's chat with your healthcare provider for the perfect feeding option for your baby!

2. Fresh Air, Fresh Start:

  • Let's keep the air clear and smoke-free, both during pregnancy and after your bundle of joy arrives.

  • Secondhand smoke is a no-go zone—it's all about that fresh air for your little one.

3. Back to Basics:

  • Always lay your baby down on their back for sleep—daytime naps and nighttime slumbers alike.

  • While we love tummy time during play, let's keep it safe and supervised, okay?

Setting the Record Straight: Common Myths Busted

1. Co-Sleeping Conversations:

  • Co-sleeping is a personal choice for some families. If it's your jam, let's do it safely.

  • Not many parents plan on this option, but default to it out of sheer necessity for sleep. So let’s just be sure to know how to do it safely and you’re good to go when that little one just won’t be put down!

  • Chat with your healthcare providers, and let's ensure a cozy and secure sleep setting for all. Review the Safe Sleep Seven guidelines to make this as safe as possible.

2. Sleep Products and Wonders:

  • Let's keep our eyes open for sleep products like special lotions or swaddles making big promises of instant sleep without the evidence to back it up. Go check out my list of favorite sleep environment products here: Doula Deb’s Favorite Things

  • Any product, supplement or miracle technique that promises immediate sleep changes for your infant is probably not actually true and most likely in the cases of infants, not truly safe either. It’s best to run anything you’d like to add to your baby’s regime by their pediatrician for safety first.
